and Democrat governors (and their Republican lackeys) support tax increases.

As reported by Kevin Duggan at The Coloradoan today, a state panel has recommended raising taxes and fees by $1.5 billion for transportation improvements in Colorado. This panel was convened by democrat governor Bill Ritter.

Suggested tax increases:

- Raising the gas tax from 13 cents to 35 cents.
- Increase motor vehicle registration fees by an average of $100
- Increasing state sales and severance taxes.
- $6/day visitor fee for motels and car rentals.

Steve Johnson (R) who was on the panel suggests that raising taxes now could be a hard sell. He suggests they ease the taxes in slowly to make them more acceptable. Senator Johnson, if you’re reading this, you can expect a letter from me in the mail very soon.

A local Fort Collins businessman agrees that vehicle registrations are too cheap, “especially on older vehicles”. My favorite quote from this businessman was,

We need to find a way to spread the pain.

So what we have here is a Democrat governor, a Republican state senator, and a local city businessman suggesting that we need to raise taxes to improve the transportation infrastructure.

By raising taxes on the poor and middle class.

- Gas taxes are regressive.
- Increasing fees on older cars (which the poor are more likely to own) are regressive.
- Sales taxes are regressive (no exclusion for food in CO).
- Visitor fees are regressive.

Tourism in Colorado involves many small businesses which will be affected. Fort Collins is not a tourist destination which explains why the local businessman didn’t mind the tax increases. It seems everyone supports a tax increase on someone else.

So tell me again why it is people think democrats care about the poor?
