Illiterate Peasants

Colorado State House Representative Douglas Bruce(R-Colorado Springs) called potential temporary foreign agricultural workers illiterate peasants today on the House floor according to an article at the Denver Post.
We don’t need 5,000 more illiterate peasants in the state of Colorado.
Rep. Bruce was immediately cut off and told he no longer had the floor. Video is available at the Denver Post link above. Rep. Bruce apparently has a history of these types of comments as he’s known as the House rabble-rouser. In an attempt to defend himself, he claimed he was correct by the strict definition of the terms.
The Republican brand in Colorado is suffering enough these days, and comments like these from our leaders are not helpful. It only gives the opposition more ammunition to use against us. There are other ways to oppose a bill without resorting to these types of tactics. The House Speaker was right to cut him off, and there will apparently be an ethics investigation going forward. To that, I disagree. Rep. Bruce’s comments, while offensive, were well within the bounds of free speech. Let the people in Colorado Springs whom he represents deal with him at the voting booth.
