Actor Tim Robbins went into a tirade at the National Association of Broadcasters’ annual show against independent media. Audio is available from the link, but I do not recommend it as it is filled with profanities.

H/T to mom for the quote via email.

I actually happen to agree with some of his comments, such as this:

“Shouldn’t broadcasters see themselves as part of a larger picture, isn’t there an obligation to honestly report on what’s going on, to pursue stories past their headlines,’’ Robbins said. “Haven’t criminal acts occurred in government? Shouldn’t there be accountability for inept policy decisions? Shouldn’t someone be fired? And you know something? I didn’t hear any of that, because I am still thinking about that starlet getting out of the car without the panties.”

While Robbins and I would disagree on who has committed these acts, I agree that the traditional media today looks more like the National Enquirer than what used to be serious, objective journalism. Robbins may also want to use a little more scrutiny in his choice of acting roles. He also had this to say about the current state of media:

“Enough is enough,” he said. “Now is the time to move away from our lesser selves. Now is the time to stop making money on the misfortunes of others and the prurient and salacious desires” of the public.

I have to ask, Mr. Robbins, have you actually watched any of the movies you’ve made lately?

Noise (Rating Unknown, includes full frontal nudity and other perverse scenes)
Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny (Rated R for pervasive language, sexual content and drug use)

This makes me wonder if maybe you’re contributing to exactly what you’re speaking out against? Ok, so I’m not wondering, I actually know you are.

There was a statement he made with which I completely disagree:

Satellite technology provides music people actually want to hear, he noted. And “just when we were close to a national news media providing a general consensus on what the truth is,” he added, “along comes the Internets [sic] that allows its users a choice on the kind of news it watches and the YouTube. My God, we’ve got to stop them.”

Just when he thought the indoctrination process was well on its way, along come these independent bloggers (such as myself) to show them for who they really are. You know, here all along I thought it was the liberals that were so in favor of choice. Oh, you didn’t mean that kind of choice.

The liberals continue to go after conservative media sources with everything they can think of. We don’t agree with them, so we can’t possibly be right, and therefore must be silenced. I’m sorry, Mr. Robbins. We simpy aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, and you can bet that as long as our consititutional rights are protected we will become louder.

There was one more statement Robbins made with which I must completely agree:

We are at an abyss as an industry and as a country.

Look in the mirror, Mr. Robbins. I know you’ll find the face of the problem right there.
