Right Witch has a blog up regarding Representative Douglas Bruce (R-Colorado Springs) called Representative Savant. She recently interviewed Bruce to discuss some of the statements that he’s made on the House floor and elsewhere.

Bruce talks about things that are important to Republicans, such as:

“…faithfully committed to limited government.”
“I’d like to get the Republicans back in the fight.”
“I’m helping them focus on principles.”
“We should focus on doing what’s right.”

Yet there’s something troublesome about his views on public perception:

“…not whether we are liked or whether we can win a popularity contest.”

The fact is, when Bruce put the (R) after his name and ran for office, he began representing not only his constituents, but also the Republican Party. Regardless of his level of intelligence, that means he needs to consider the ramifications of his statements and actions not only in the context of how they will be perceived by the public, but also how the Republican Party will be seen in the eyes of the people.

If he’s unable to do that, then he should remove himself from the party and run as an Independent. That appears to be how he likes it anyway.

I read the Right Witch article. A couple of questions…

What exactly is your qualm with Representative Bruce? Is it that his lack of social norms are ultimately turning people off to the very principles–limited government, liberty–he is attempting to instill? Or is it simply that he is giving Republicans a bad name…along the lines of ‘racist’? Is he doing more bad than good?

Moreover, should our allegiance be in a party of principles?

And, out of curiosity, does this behavior on his part extend beyond the “illiterate peasants” remark?

My qualm, exactly, is that Representative Bruce says things that he knows will get a negative reaction from others in the House.

His latest comment was interpreted as racist by many (including myself). Some people will then make the connection that Republicans are racists (and many do, even though reality is quite the contrary).

Politics is compromise, plain and simple. If one joins a party, their allegience should be to that party. What if I asked you the same question ten years ago? Was your allegiance to your country as strong then as it is now, or because of the leader did your allegiance fail?

As for his behavior, this is the first I’ve heard about him. I’d have to research previous comments to find out if there are any others he’s made that fall into the same category.
